Thoughts on Guate

Things I learned in Guatemala:

1. What unconditional love really is - So many times the love we show or give is based on circumstances or convenience, what the other person can do for us, how they treat us. Sometimes it's out of obligation, maybe even sympathy. If you can give me, please me, provide for me, care for me, befriend me, make me laugh, let me win, include me in your inner circle, and on goes the list, I will add you to my list of loved ones. Then let something fall apart, let's completely disagree on something trivial or say things in anger that we don't mean but still hurt each other's feelings; forget to include only me in something special or wait a little too long to come see about me when something's wrong. It's that much easier to reconsider where you rank in my loveds (faves).

I met 12 year old Daniela Wednesday morning. She and Karen were playing on the seesaw. I walked over and asked their names, watched them go up and down a few times. Daniela invited me to take her seat and go a few rounds with Karen. The two of them switched places, and then Karen stood in the middle and "surfed" while Daniela and I made waves. The bell rang, signaling the end of recess; I took a picture of the girls in front of the seesaw, hugged them both before they went back to their classes. Friday afternoon during VBS, we talked about how each of us are God's treasure. I sat behind Daniela, and when told to tell two other people that they were indeed God's treasure, Daniela and I looked each other in the eye and said, she in Spanish and I in English, that she was God's treasure. The day's craft was making necklaces, a piece of treasure, to remind the girls of the priceless treasures they are in God's eyes. I chose a table, sat and helped girls get started on their necklaces, chased beads across the table, tied necklaces around necks, cut strings for the second and third go rounds. From across the room, Daniela comes and slips her necklace around my neck. She came back a little later with a bracelet. Saturday morning we went up to the houses to tell the girls goodbye. And Daniela would not let me go. And I didn't want to let her go either. We sat on the porch for a good 20 minutes, not saying much because I have fabulous Spanish skills, just holding hands and smiling at each other, giggling every now and then.

I couldn't give Daniela anything. I couldn't do anything for her, at least not in the way we normally think of doing something for someone, I couldn't provide for any of her basic needs, not immediately, not the week I was there. I had a hard time talking with her beyond the basics - name, age, favorite color, favorite subject, like to do - because we don't speak each other's primary language. I could sit with her and spend time with her, play with her and laugh with her, hug her. And that was enough. We take a long time to meet and spend time and like and bond and trust and finally love. For her, and the other girls, knowing that I, we, were there for them was enough.

2. I am lovable and worthy of receiving love. This is a hard one for me. Not because anyone's hurt me so much that I feel this way or said these things to me, but because I've believed them about myself. I know the things I've done, the horrible things I've thought, awful things I secretly desire. And because of this, in my eyes, my value is greatly diminished.

It amazed me that God would use a few moments with a couple of teenage girls, speak through them to me, to remind me of His truth, that He doesn't love me any less because of, I'm not disqualified from anything because of...I thought we were there to let Him love these girls through us. Little did I know that He would love us, love me, through them.

3. Be open, with others and with God. Though one thing I desire greatly is a great group of friends to be close to, I have a difficult time moving from "Hello, nice to meet you," to small talk to deeper matters that show I'm approachable and would like to have a meaningful relationship with you. Let's just say I don't give a great first impression. My now friend Scott says he thought I did not like him at all the first time we met; I did not seem as excited as he was that our Texan-ness was common - my replies were short and to the point, and I probably was wearing the disinterested semi-scowl that's commonly on my face. I realized again how distant I can be when, one morning before breakfast (in Guate) while talking to Bobby, Dr. Jim said, sounding very surprised, "She does talk!" And it hit me in the face - I am very closed.

The fact that these girls were willing to sit with us (and let us sit with them), hold our hands, talk with us...to have been through so much and be so trusting is amazing, and it made me understand that if relationship and community is what I desire, I have to be willing to do what it takes to foster that community. That means being open, talking, sometimes being a bit uncomfortable, and being present.

I was really glad that George was one of my teammates, because he walked and talked with me one morning and gave me an opportunity to take a step in that direction and an invitation to take advantage of his listening ear. I'm not sure that much of what I said that morning made sense, I appreciate greatly his patience with my rambling, but it did remind me that life is meant to be shared. We weren't, I was not made to be strong all the time and walk through fire coming out on the other side seemingly unscathed. I was a teenager when someone told me I was one of the strongest people she knew. If only she knew. It's okay and easy to laugh with others, share good times and make good memories. But it's also okay to be broken and admit it, and even ask for help. It's how we heal and grow. And there are definitley some places in me that need to be healed.

Talk to you soon, friend.

Ridin' Down the Highway

It was a little foggy on my way to work this morning. Actually really foggy, until I got to Midtown. There’s one lane on that end of Main St. because of the Light Rail tracks. When I get to Holman, I see a man walking in the middle of the street just past the light. I slow down so that he can get out of the way without me hitting him, and as I do, I get a very good look at him. He looks so lost – he is tall and extremely thin. Where his shirt hangs open, I can see the bones of his ribs poking through his skin. His jeans are torn and dirty. I didn’t see if he was wearing shoes. I sighed, and my heart broke as I wondered how many more of him there are.

I’m not a stranger to the homeless. Some are asleep under the old Sears storefront when I cruise by in the morning. Many visit the church to get a lunch and a clean change of clothes. There is one woman who sits always at the bus stop at Main and Clay; I pass her everyday on the way home. I just wish there was something more I could do. I know that nothing is free and it costs money to run programs and agencies that help men and women and children and families in this situation. I guess what I don’t understand is how we live in a nation with such wealth and still have such a large number of people homeless and on the street.

In Heaven...Still on Earth

Last night I went to the Chris Tomlin/Israel Houghton Hello Love Tour Concert. The feeling of worshipping with an arena full of people, brothers and sisters, was amazing. There was a point where all of the voices in the room were singing the chorus of How Great is Our God. Beautiful. Chris went on to talk about last year's tour and how he learned the words to this song in the language spoken in each world city he went to. And then he sang How Great is Our God in spanish, then in russian. And I closed my eyes and remebered the times in chapel that Jose Velasquez prayed in spanish, and when Yun-Hi prayed in Korean and got just a glimpse of heaven. The night was truly amazing.

We also sang Amazing Grace together. And when we got to the chorus my chains are gone/i've been set free/my God, my Savior has ransomed me/and like a flood His mercy rains unending love, amazing grace, Chris said something along the lines of you can't lift your hands to worship God if they are chained, so give it to Him and in faith, raise your hands in freedom. And I realized that it is a daily giving it to Him, believing that He will take it and rain down mercy and love on me until I drown.

One word I heard over and again last night: beautiful. And truly it is.

I miss you, friend.

Flip the Switch

I think I was just struck by lightning. Well, not literally. But I did have a lightbulb-glowing-above-my-head realization.

Today has not been the best. I was crabby at 7:43 when I first sat down at my desk this morning. I've been a litte, okay, really testy. Around 10 a.m., I'd decided that today was definitely not going to be the greatest. My to-do list has gotten shorter, but the can-you-please-do-this-even-though-it's-not-your-job list has gotten longer. A few minutes ago, I gave up on trying to make this day any better.

Walking back to my desk, I figured just how I was going to wind down once I got home. A shameful compulsive behavior; actually trying to quit. In the meantime I don't feel like learning a new one. Bad, foolish, I know, but honest.

I thought, "Well, I have three more days to be in hell." I'm hoping to go cold turkey really soon. And then a second later, "I can be in hell as long as I want, really. I have to decide to get out."

I can choose to stay in this pit of shame and sickness or I can get on God's team and fight my way out. I can choose instant gratification or lasting satisfaction. News, huh? Maybe only to me.

Come ye sinners, poor and needy, weak and wounded, sick and sore. Jesus ready stands to save you, full of pity, love, and power. Come ye thirsty, come and welcome God's free bounty glorify. True belief and true repentance and every grace that brings you nigh...

Will I rise and go to Jesus?

The Angels Cry

We fall down, we lay our crowns (my junk, all the stuff I hold onto and sometimes want more than I want God or the things of God) at the feet of Jesus (and find) the greatness of mercy and love at the feet of Jesus.

And we cry holy, holy, holy is the Lamb.

Bring me back to You. Overwhelm me with Your love. Help me understand how special I am to You, how much You cherish me, and how much that matters.

I miss you, friend.

Prayers of the People

Dearest Jesus,

Break my heart and bring me back to You. Rain on me with love until I drown. Give me the courage to look outside and see the beautiful sunrise of a new day.

Forgive me for my rebellion; thank You for the mercy and love I find at Your feet; please heal my waywardness. Please be strong for me when I in my own might cannot be.

I hope that You do not grow weary of me; I am weary with myself. Thank You that Your love is strong.

In Your name, Amen.

Sweet Songs

When I least expect it, when I most think God is ignoring me, He surprises me and says, "I'm listening. I see you. I haven't forgotten you. I love you." Last night, he used a stranger named Valerie, who probably had no idea that God was using her to speak to me through her simple greeting. Yet, I am so grateful that she obeyed.

Heavenly Father, You always amaze me. Let Your kingdom come in my world and in my life. You give me the food I need to live through the day and forgive me as I forgive the people that wronged me...So why do I worry? Why do I freak out? God knows what I need. You know what I need...There are two things You told me, that You are strong and You love me, yes You love me...Your love is, Your love is, Your love is strong.

Thank You that You are love and You are strong and Your love is strong.

Face Up

The journey of rebellion is never as glorious as it seems it will be when first setting out. Either your conscience nags you and won't let you settle into it or the excitement of getting away with whatever it is has grown so much to be dull and boring and no longer satisfying.

It's time for healing, time to move on. It's time to fix what's been broken too long. Time to make right what has been wrong. It's time to find my way to where I belong. Time for a milestone, time to begin again, reevaluate who I really am.

Again recently I was presented with the statement "I do what I do because I believe what I believe". But before that, I heard this lesson and am trying to take it to heart: Yes, God is excited about our life-long journey of redemption and the people we will become, but He also loves you for the person you are now, just as you are.

Just as I am, the person I am now - slightly blatantly rebellious, sad that I am not further along on the path of holiness, a little doubtful that healing is for all and I am one of many and now really means now, more flaky than faithful, cracked and need to be shattered and rebuilt...

Maybe it's because what I cannot be, He is and what I cannot do, He does. He waits for me to return from my waywardness and welcomes me back, walks with me and teaches me along the way, restores me, is always faithful to me even when I am not to Him, skillfully shapes and molds me with every twist and turn and bump my life takes....

There's a wave that's crashing over me and all I can do is surrender. Jesus, rain on me with love until I drown.

I miss you, friend. Hope you are well.

Look Deeper

I do what I do because I believe what I believe.

Good and bad, wise and foolish - I do what I do because I believe what I believe.

Being kind, giving, patient, loving - I do what I do because I believe what I believe.

Indulging now instead of enduring satisfaction later - I do what I do because I believe what I believe.

So, what do i believe?

Where I'm Going

I've been sitting here for way too long; it's time that I was moving on... - Third Day

Sounds like "I've been sitting in hell for way too long", which I have. And as I have been more rebellious, I've become more apathetic. I've been gone so long that it seems easier to stay away...far, far away. Only a wrecking ball will make these cement walls tumble to the ground.

I've said these words so many times and been in this place for so long, I'm not sure that anything makes this confession more valid or sincere than any of the others. I see glimpses of peace and rest and beauty, and I want that. I want those things back. My heart says whatever it takes, but my mind is screaming about the things I'm giving up. What am I giving up? Shame, blame, anger, resentment, fear...What do I want? Freedom, peace, rest, joy, truth, a softened heart...

Give up on all the other things 'cause My love can bring you more. And if you take a chance on me I'll give you what you're looking for. - Third Day

Jesus, blow me out of the water with Your love. Help me to trust in You, in Your faithfulness, everyday. Whatever...it...takes. Break the things that need to be broken and heal what needs to be healed.

From a broken earth flowers come up, pushing through the dirt. - Dave Crowder

Mighty to Save

Savior, He can move the mountains. My God is mighty to save. He is mighty to save.

I have to confess, there have been times lately where I have been envious of God's work in other people's lives. I can see His answers to their prayers, and to my prayers for them, but not to their prayers for me or my prayers for me (which haven't been that frequent). It seems things are going well for them; they seem to have peace and joy; they are being productive at work; their relationships are trucking along quite well. I, however, still feel in a rut; peace seems to be the farthest thing from my plate; I smile and grimmace through work many days.

You are my God as much as theirs, aren't You? Why not me? When will it be my turn? Do You even hear me?

Sometimes I wonder if He gets tired of hearing me whine. Other times I wonder if He's waiting for me to believe just a little bit more.

In the midst of all my crap, God is moving. It's taken a few knock-down drag-outs and some tears for me to see it, but His hand is moving in my circumstances also. And despite my jealousy, above my complaining, and beyond my rebellion, He has reached down and done it again. Maybe not as fast, and maybe not the way that I'd hoped for, but He continues to rescue me.

There is hope, there is hope for my lonely soul. There is hope, there is hope to be made whole. There is life, there is life to be set free. There is life, there is life surrounding me. There is hope, there is hope for my broken heart. There is hope, there is hope for a brand new start. There is life, there is life. Give me eyes to see. There is life, there is life. You have captured me.

God has shown me in the past few weeks just how well He knows my heart and just how closely He is paying attention. Jesus, give me eyes to see.

Keep on dreamin' of the day when it all will change. Believe in the end love wins. If you're waiting for the time when your sun will shine, look above 'cause love wins. - RSB

Boomin' Out the Stereo System...

Have you thought of how many times a day God says, "I love you."

"But God, I haven't taken time for you today like I should've. I've gotten lost in myself and all the things I have to do. I haven't even spoken to You today, except now."

He answers, "I love you."

"But Abba, my thoughts have strayed from You and things of You today. I've thought ugly things, mean things about people, ungrateful things about where you've placed me."

He answers, "I love you."

"But Father, I have not been good today. I've believed the lies Satan has told me about Your lack of care for me, Your disinterest in my situation, Your power that is not at work within me. I have disobeyed you; I have rebelled and run far away from Your guidance and Your embrace."

"My child," He says, "I am coming after you. I love you."

The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing. - Zephaniah 3:17

And He knows what kind of music you like.

I miss you, friend. I pray God tells you how much He loves you just as He has told me today.

No One Else

I was reminded of something a friend said to me yesterday about being close to someone and yet being a little upset or disappointed when they don't offer you the comfort that you were looking for in a tough moment. Lots of times when I have bad days, I get really...I want to escape and hide from whatever went wrong that day, but I also want someone to listen to me, to ask me what the matter is and tell me everything's going to be okay. Sometimes I get so that I comfort myself in daydreams that someday someone will.

Tonight when I laid down across the bed, curled up under the covers and again wished that I had someone's chest to lean my head against, someone's arms to be wrapped up in, someone's tender voice to be comforted by, I was serenaded by:

When no one else knows how I feel Your love for me is proven real. When no one else cares where I've been You run to me with outstretched hands...

How amazing that He knows and hears my heart. He sees what I never would have told Him about, wouldn't think to bother Him with, and reaches to scoop me up and love on me. He is all together wonderful to me.

And You hold me in Your arms again. - Building 429

Who Am I? - Continued

It's hard to stand on shifting sand. It's hard to shine in the shadows of the night. You can't be free if you don't reach for help. You can't love if you don't love yourself. - Natalie Grant

It's interesting when you hear or read something and see yourself in it, especially when you're just kind of drifting along. Though my favorite is the second verse of this song, most likely because victory has come, I heard myself in the first today.

I am in hiding because if anyone knew who and what I really am (which is no worse or better than what we all are: fallen, living by grace alone, striving for holiness) I would be exposed, shunned and abandoned. That fear makes it that much more difficult to say, "My name is...and I am an.../have a compulsion to.../carry around.../often think of..." What does that mean once it's spoken, deeper than the surface, more than just an admission or confession? What does that say about me?

That brings another question, a more important question, that demands an answer.

Gomer was exposed in the town square before she was bought back by her husband. And the result? "I will betroth you to me forever; I will betroth you in righteousness and justice, in love and compassion..."

I am strong all because of You. I stand in awe of every mountain that You move for I am changed. Yesterday is gone. I am safe from this moment on. There's no fear when the night comes round. I'm in better hands now. - Natalie Grant

I miss you, friend. Hope you are well. Talk to you soon.

Who Am I? - Part 1

A friend posed this question to me: In the last few weeks, what have you been learning about who you are?

What a loaded question...

I am incredibly loved and madly pursued by God: I've been listening to Tim Keller of Redeemer Presby in NY. One of the messages I've been listening to is about how God is the true bridegroom and what that really means, just the power and intimacy of that relationship and the life-changing possibilities and potency that the understanding brings. The scripture he uses is from Hosea 3 about buying Gomer back. To me, those are tender words, that I break His heart again and again, and yet He still comes after me. When I have bad days, I often think about the future and how I don't want to have to someday explain to my husband that I had a bad day and what that led to. Often when I imagine it, he is hurt to the point of distancing himself from me. And I never argue, don't blame him for feeling that way, actually try to push him away before he has the chance to reject me. I was thinking about it one day, and realized that honestly, I'd want him to forgive me and hold me, not shut me out. That's what God does for me, everyday with everything. And I know I hurt His heart a lot, but He doesn't hurt mine in return. I heard a song last week that I thought said it very well: I am coming back 'cause You are coming after me and I surrender now (Desperation Band).

To Someone, I am precious and cherished and loved: I really saw this when I watched someone I really loved commit to loving someone who wasn't me. And I prayed for much grace and peace and wholeness and really just healing of my heart. And God really came through. I felt His arms around me during that time, and I knew He was near. It was still hard, but I made it. Thinking about it now, it kind of blows my mind that He knows how I felt about him, how there were times when I loved him more than God, and yet, when the rug was fully ripped out from under me, He was there to make sure that I didn't come tumbling down. He didn't say you wanted him, and you can have all the pain and baggage that comes with a broken heart, He didn't laugh at me and tell me that I get to suffer some more; because I asked, He answered with arms wide open, poured out so much love on me...me! Who am I, who in the world am I, that He should tend to me, especially considering how much I try to push Him away.

I am shown much grace everyday, tons of grace. None of which I deserve.

I am not defined by my past unless I let it define who I am. Which I do, a lot of days more than I'd like to admit. Which is probably why victory seems like a foreign concept in my mind.

I am on a journey, going through valleys, climbing mountains, walking through deserts and stopping at springs, all on the way to my destination.

Think on These Things....

God never loses sight of you. He sees where you are. He even knows your name. - Dennis Raney

Do you believe He sees you? In the darkest despair or the strongest storm, the most stifling loneliness, He sees where I am. Even when others don't know, never knew, chose to forget, He knows.

What a mess I've made of my existence. But You love me even now and still I see somehow that You see the real me, hiding in my skin, broken from within. Unveil me completely. I'm loosening my grasp. There's no need to mask my frailty 'cause You see the real me. - Natalie Grant

If I can't be real with God, who in the world can I be real with? Why hide if He knows and loves me anyways? There's nothing I can do to make Him love me any less.

It's Your kindness, Lord, that leads us to repentance...

Do we find in His kindness His mercy and realize that we don't deserve it, convicting us and leading us to repentance? Practiced, rehearsed repentance for show and acceptance makes genuine repentance internally questionable, more difficult, confusing, doubtful.

Oh, but I was good. - Shane and Shane

Yeah, but were you good because you felt obligated to be, or were you good because you love Me?

Honesty

Beauty for ashes, a garment of praise for my heaviness. Beauty for ashes, take this heart of stone and make it Yours. - Shane and Shane

My guilt, shame, disobedience, rebellion, depression, loneliness all add to the weight of my heaviness. The more I dwell on my distaste for my situation, use that as an excuse to rebel harder and run farther, am too proud or embarrassed or scared or ashamed to ask forgiveness and grace to try again, the harder, stonier and thornier my heart becomes. Now how much more difficult is it to run to my Father's arms, crawl up in His lap, cry and be truly sorry, truly repentant, truly broken over our distance, over the distance I've created between us? How can I ask to reconcile this relationship?

Could circumstances possibly change who I forever am in You? - MercyMe

Relationships constantly change, some for better, some for worse, some to never exist again. Tests come again and again to strengthen, and each time failure seems emminent. The search for the treasure of contentment continues to be futile. Community has never been so lonely. Maybe then, the answer is yes.

What do you believe? What do you choose to believe at this moment? Maybe that's the answer.

But now I will take back the ripened grain and new wine I generously provided each harvest season. I will take away the wool and linen clothing I gave her to cover her nakedness. I will strip her naked in public, while all her lovers look on. No one will be able to rescue her from my hands. I will put an end to her annual festivals, her new moon celebrations, and her Sabbath days - all her appointed festivals. I will destroy her grapevines and fig trees, things she claims her lovers gave her. I will let them grow into tangled thickets, where only wild animals will eat the fruit. I will punish her for all those times when she burned incense to her images of Baal, when she put on her earrings and jewels and went out to look for her lovers but forgot all about me," says the LORD.

Ever wonder if He cares that you hurt? Ever wonder how broken your heart has to be? How lost and tired do I have to be before Love comes back around?

Oh, my God, shine Your light on us that we might live. - RSB

Listening

All of You is more than enough for all of me, for every thirst and every need. You satisfy me with Your love, and all I have in You is more than enough.

All of You, who God is, all of His character, all of His ability, all of His being, all of Him - love, mercy, grace, goodness, providence, holiness, peace, patience, gentleness, tenderness, honesty, reality, justice, the list could go on throughout eternity - is more than enough for all of me - my weakness, frailty, neediness, insecurities, inadequacies, dirty little secrets, worries, my junk, the desires of my heart, my loneliness, heartache, my humanness.

You satisfy me with Your love - satisfaction is found only in You, not in the friends, strangers, movies, music, books, activities, busyness, hobbies I try to fill my life with. I have searched the heights and the darkest depths; everything else leaves me wanting. And what fulfillment, what peace, what comfort and security Your love brings - to know You and be loved is enough.

And all I have in You - salvation, eternal life, peace, joy, hope - is more than enough.

If the above is true, why is it so hard to let You be more than enough, even merely enough, when that is all You want from me - my heart, all of it, to lean on You, trust You, be real with You? When You asked me to let You be more than enough, why I wouldn't let You be more than enough, I was (and today still am) so quick to say, yes, that's what I want too...but I still want x, y and z?

I'm sorry I keep trying to wriggle free from Your embrace. Jesus, rain on me with love until I drown.

I miss you, friend. Hope you are well. Talk to you soon.

Unbelievable

Is it possible for your thinking to disrupt your peace? Have you ever heard God whisper, "Here it is. This is what I have for you. This is what you've been waiting for," and you respond so thankfully, so excited at first only to dwell on what you still don't have and how this is definitley not what you asked for?

It's pretty crazy to know God still wants my heart after I've slapped Him in the face yet again. I will never understand why God is so good, but I am so glad He is.

You did tell me so, didn't you?

Talk to you soon, friend.

Incredible Love

I am so glad these things are true - completely, absolutely and eternally true.

- God, Jesus, the Spirit loves me. Oh, yes He does.
- In spite of everything I do, all the crap I pull, as hard as I try and run, He loves me.
- His desire is that I would know Him, know the breadth, depth, height and width of His love for me, be captivated by His love and love Him in return.
- He knows exactly how to capture my attention, just what will touch my heart.
- He sees what is in my heart, even when I can't seem to tell Him any of it.
- He is still with me, will call to me when I am in the wilderness, even when I have wandered there in my own foolishness, selfishness and stuborness.

His pursuit of me, His desire for my heart astounds me. Amazing that He knows how to hug my soul just right to say, "I'm here. I'm not going anywhere. I love you, now and always. Talk to Me. Cry to Me. Trust Me."

The lessons we learn over and over...He must really want us to know.

Talk to you soon, friend.
